Discover Our Top 10 Amazing Qualities
1. International Baccalaureate® (IB)
As an IB World School, Edison High School offers a world-class education that goes beyond traditional learning. Our rigorous IB curriculum challenges students of all levels to develop critical thinking skills, understand different cultures, and learn how to solve problems in real-world situations. With a focus on conceptual-based learning, the IB curriculum prepares students for a life in a global society.
2. Edison Academy
Edison High School is home to Edison Academy, one of six academies in Fairfax County Public Schools. We offer Career and Technical Education programs in Automotive Technology, Chinese, Criminal Justice, Computer Systems, Electrical Engineering, Veterinary Science, and more. We also offer courses that provide credit for supervised Work Based Learning experiences. Our programs help prepare students for both college or career after high school graduation.
3. Academic Excellence and Accreditation
At Edison High School, our commitment to academic excellence is evident through our full accreditation status, the achievements of our students, including over 120 IB diploma candidates, 2 National Merit Semifinalists, 6 National Merit Commended Scholars, and the impressive number of students enrolled in IB and Honors courses. We are fully accredited in math, English, and science in Virginia, which is a testament to our commitment to providing a quality education for our students.
4. Young Scholars and AVID
Edison High School offers the Young Scholars program, designed to identify and support students with high academic potential who may face additional barriers to accessing and reaching their full potential in advanced academic programming. These may include students who are economically disadvantaged, twice-exceptional, or multilingual learners. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nationally recognized college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the students in the academic middle. These are often the students who will be the first in their families to attend college and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
5. Purple Star School
Edison High School has obtained the Distinguished Purple Star School Designation. Purple Star Schools are recognized by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children for their dedication to helping military-connected students and their families.
6. Global STEM Challenges Program
The Global STEM Challenges Program is a three-year program within Edison High School designed for students interested in learning through solving real-world problems. Students take integrated mathematics, science, technology, and engineering classes, and develop 21st century skills that universities and employers value.
7. Environmental Education and Leadership
Edison High School is one of only 56 schools nationwide to earn the Green Flag award from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) through the EcoSchools U.S. program. Schools earn this honor by demonstrating their commitment to sustainability measures. At Edison, we have a number of student-led environmental action initiatives and groups, such as the Environmental Club and 4H club, working on waste and recycling programs, lake clean-ups, composting, plantings, and other environmental projects.
Additionally, the Edison High School Garden was the first FCPS school garden accepted into the USDA People’s Garden Initiative. For a garden to be included in the People’s Garden Initiative, the garden must use sustainable practices that benefit people and wildlife and teach about gardening and resilient, local food systems.
8. Multicultural and Multilingual Support
Our school has more than 50 countries and 47 languages represented in the student population. Our bilingual and multilingual office staff members and family liaisons are able to help connect non-English speaking community members with the information and assistance they need to support their children and ensure academic success. We have multicultural nights that strengthen the community and raise awareness of other cultures in our school. Our Multicultural Night celebrates diversity, promotes understanding, builds community, encourages cultural exchange, and helps create a broader global perspective.
9. Active and Supportive PTSA
Our school has an active and supportive Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). The PTSA helps enhance our school community, increase our resources by fundraising, offers many before and after school programming for students, and helps to advocate for the needs of the students and school.
10. Student Activities
Edison High School is proud to offer more than 90 clubs that reflect our students' diverse interests and passions. These clubs enrich our school culture and foster a positive climate. Our Eagle Council, composed of representatives from each club, serves as a bridge between the student body and administration, ensuring that student voices are heard and that their insights help guide meaningful changes at Edison. Our student-athletes and coaches provide our school community with competitive games and school spirit. While many of our teams excel, some highlights are our 2-time state champion in golf, our regional championship wrestling team, and our district-winning girls basketball and softball teams.
