Global STEM Challenges Program

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Curriculum

Freshman Year Experience

Theme: Food and Transportation

Projects:

  1. Greenhouse Design
  2. Microscope Design
  3. Therapeutic Food Design and Transportation
  4. Molecular Modeling
  5. Composting Design

Projects were developed through FCPS teacher collaboration with the Knowles Teacher Initiative.

Standards & Competencies:

SCIENCE: Most of the Biology Standards of Learning will be addressed, with some focus on a few standards from the Standards of Learning for Chemistry and Physics. We will be scaffolding the content, skills, and critical thinking required to support students for IB science courses. * Due to the adjusted pacing of this integrated program, the biology SOL will be taken in January of year 2.

TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING: The Engineering Design Process serves as the large focus of this course. Students will be creating models and prototypes, using AutoDesk Inventor and RobotC for much of the technological planning tools.

MATH: Most of the Geometry Standards of Learning will be addressed, with focus on many standards from the Standards of Learning for Algebra 2. We will be scaffolding the content, skills, and critical thinking required to support students for IB math courses. * Due to the adjusted pacing of this integrated program, the geometry SOL will be taken in January of year 2.

Sophomore Year Experience

Theme: Water

Projects:

  1. 1. Water Filtration
  2. 2. Communicating Water Quality Measurements
  3. 3. Capturing gas from Ice Cores
  4. 4. Hand warmer/Cooler
  5. 5. Desalination

Projects were developed through FCPS teacher collaboration with the Knowles Teacher Initiative.

Standards & Competencies:

SCIENCE: Most of the Chemistry Standards of Learning will be addressed, with some focus on a few standards from the Standards of Learning for Chemistry and Physics. We will finish the Biology standards by January in preparation for the SOL test. We will be scaffolding the content, skills, and critical thinking required to support students for IB science courses.

TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING: The Engineering Design Process serves as the large focus of this course. Students will be creating models and prototypes, using AutoDesk Inventor and RobotC for much of the technological planning tools.

Junior Year Experience

Theme: Energy

Projects:

Projects will be developed through FCPS teacher collaboration with the Knowles Teacher Initiative.

Standards & Competencies:

SCIENCE: Most of the Physics Standards of Learning will be addressed, with some focus on a few standards from the Standards of Learning for Chemistry and Biology. In this year, students will concentrate on Biology or IB Physics HL and also preparing themselves for the second year of IB Biology HL in the student's senior year.

MATH: Students will be focusing on advanced math with standards for IB Math SL. We will be scaffolding the content, skills, and critical thinking required to support students for IB math courses.
