A Message From Mrs. Burke

Hello, Edison HS Community,

Happy Friday!  As we close another busy week here at Edison HS, I'm filled with pride in all we've accomplished. Here's a quick roundup of recent events and exciting announcements for the days ahead:

Firstly, a gentle reminder for our students parking on the side streets around Edison High: please be mindful of where you park. Do not block driveways or fire hydrants; let’s keep our streets clean by not littering.

Turning to athletics, it’s been an exciting week for Edison Eagles! Our teams have competed in district and regional play. Many of our teams have advanced to regional play: Girls' and Boys' Track and Field, Baseball and Softball, Girls' and Boys' Lacrosse, and Girls' Soccer.  Congratulations, and good luck with all of your games.

Our JROTC program held its awards ceremony this past Tuesday, recognizing many students for their outstanding contributions. Well done to all awardees!

Additionally, the guitar concert on Wednesday was nothing short of spectacular—a heartfelt thanks to all participants for their performance.

Last night, we celebrated our academy students at the Academy Awards, acknowledging their dedication and effort throughout the year. Your hard work does not go unnoticed!

 Upcoming Events:

  • Senior Prom: Our seniors eagerly anticipate the prom this Saturday night at the Harbor View. A gentle reminder that the event runs from 7 PM to 10 PM. Let’s make it a night to remember!
  • PTSA Meeting: Join us for our last PTSA meeting of the school year on May 21 at 7 PM in the library.
  • Parent Coffee: I will be hosting an end-of-the-year parent coffee on June 20th at 9 AM. This will be a great opportunity to reflect on our achievements and discuss plans for the upcoming school year. I hope many of you will be able to join.

Thank you all for your continued support and engagement.

Silver Key: Maggie Chen, 10th Grade, Poetry:  Laid in Earth; Justine Olson, 10th grade, Short Story:  Fear Raging Like Fire

Sophomore Vivian Weszelovszky was named the winner of the Southeastern Region National Music Week Essay Contest. Vivian was awarded a check for $75.00 and her essay was published (see below) in the National Federation of Music Clubs' newsletter. Congratulations, Vivian!

3. 🎓 Calling All Alumni and Friends!

Educate Fairfax is proud to introduce FCPS Alumni & Friends, an online network of alumni, teachers, parents/caregivers, and community members with ties to Fairfax County Public Schools. Whether you are a recent FCPS graduate or you’ve returned to Fairfax to work or raise your own family, this network will celebrate our alumni and friends of FCPS through stories, news and events, reunions, homecoming, and other activities. It’s also a great way to rekindle old friendships and build new ones. Join FCPS Alumni & Friends today!

4. Student Intention Forms for 2024-2025

If your family is not returning to Thomas A. Edison High School for the 2024-2025 school year, you will need to complete and return the "Student's Intention For The Next School Year" form, which you can find at this link:

https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/it110.pdf.

A digital or typed parent/guardian signature is acceptable.  Student ID Number may be left blank. Please send to our registrar, Tawanna Bates, at Ms. Bates. Thank you for your assistance. Go Eagles!

5. Colleges and Universities Still Accepting Applications

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has released their annual list of colleges and universities that are still accepting applications from prospective freshmen or transfer students for the fall of 2023. Students and families are encouraged to use this tool to search colleges that still have space available. Users may narrow down the list of schools by state and view whether a school still has financial aid, as well as unfilled housing.

Additionally, NACAC has created an enrollment deposit fee waiver request form, considered by some institutions, for students experiencing significant financial hardship. Families can learn more about the enrollment deposit fee waiver and eligibility on the NACAC website. It is recommended that students and families contact their school counselor or college and career specialist with any questions.Students who still need assistance applying for the FAFSA or VASA (financial aid forms) can schedule a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email [email protected]. All FAFSA or VASA help that your school or College Access Fairfax provides is free.

6. Jump Start for Rising 9th Graders

Your student's transition to high school is very important to us! This year we will be offering an optional Jump Start program to our rising 9th grade students. Students will be able to register to attend one of the two-day sessions.

  • August 7 from 9:00AM - 1:00 PM

Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., where students will be able to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth.

Representatives from local businesses, Fairfax County Public Library, and the Fairfax County Park Authority are participating in the Summer Extravaganza. Community organizations, such as Neighborhood Community Services, will be at the event as well. All will have learning activities, tips, and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

Visit the Summer Extravaganza webpage for more details and register to attend. Registration is not required, but it's helpful for planning purposes.

9. Calling all MDs, DOs, PAs and NPs who are licensed to practice in Virginia

We need your help on Thursday, May 30 for the Edison Sports Physicals Night Athletic Training Fundraiser. This event is how we raise money to purchase medical supplies (tape, bandages, ice bags, crutches, etc.). We receive NO FUNDING from FCPS for supplies. Last year, we took a $1,400 loss because we had to close athlete registration early due to low number of volunteers.

At our event, we have ATCs, nurses and PTs who start the exam with height, weight, BP, vision, and functional orthopedic screenings, then the athletes see an MD, DO, PA or NP for the final exam and clearance for sport participation. Dinner is provided for volunteers starting at 4:30 pm. You would see your first athlete around 5:45 pm and we are usually finished around 7:50 pm.

Please consider helping at our event, even if it’s just for an hour and please feel free to share this info with any MDs, DOs, PAs and NPs you know who may be able to hep as well. Use the link below to register as a volunteer. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Email Edison Head Athletic Trainer, Tom Milosavich [email protected] with any questions. Thank you again!

Monster drawings by Ms. Deveney's Kindergarten classes.  Ceramic monster sculptures by Mrs. Garriott's Sculpture 1&2 classes.

Every kindergartener at Clermont ES contributed to our unique monster project. Their drawings were then sent to Edison HS,  where the sculpture students brought these monsters to life in 3D form. This collaborative effort truly showcases the unity and shared creativity of our two schools.

Night on Broadway was a huge success!  Above is the opening number "Opening Up" from Waitress the Musical.  Below is the choir seniors' last time on stage.  We will miss our choir seniors!

A Message From Mrs. Burke

Hello, Edison HS Community,

Happy Friday! As we wrap up another week, I want to thank all the parents and students who participated in our "Thank a Staff Member" initiative. Your messages of appreciation were incredibly uplifting, and many of our staff members have proudly displayed them on their walls. Your thoughtful words truly made a difference!

It was a joy to see our students' creative talents on display at our Pyramid Art Show we enjoyed this Thursday.  The creativity exhibited by students across all grade levels was truly inspiring.  Additionally, our "Night on Broadway" event was a resounding success. Hearing our students sing and perform with such passion was a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

Congratulations to our boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, softball, and baseball teams on their victories in the first round of district play. Your hard work and dedication are evident, and we are all cheering you on as you advance in the competitions.

A special salute goes to our JROTC students who recently excelled in their review and retreat. We are so proud of your discipline and commitment to excellence.

Congratulations to the cast of “The Addams Family” on a spectacular production. A special shout-out to Porter Bertman (Uncle Fester), who earned a Cappie nomination for Best Comedic Actor in a Musical. Your outstanding performance brought laughter and joy to all of us.

Thank you to our PTSA for organizing a delightful Teacher Appreciation Luncheon provided by Bonefish Grill. Thank you, Debora, one of the managers and Edison Alumni, for providing us with the delicious lunch!  The delicious meal and thoughtful gift cards were a huge hit among our staff. Your continual support enhances our school community in so many ways.

Thank you to our athletic boosters and their sponsor, Kona Ice, for providing a sweet treat this past Wednesday. It was a perfect addition to our week and allowed us to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Lastly, a big thank you to all our Edison mothers. We wish you the happiest of Mother’s Day!

Let’s keep this positive momentum going as we move into the next week. Have a wonderful weekend!

1. Teacher Appreciation Week

Thank you, thank you, thank you to our PTSA, led by President Sharon Riley,  for all of the good wishes, gift certificates, and delicious food during Teacher Appreciation Week! With the assistance of Bonefish Grill and our Culinary Arts students below, the PTSA hosted our staff at a wonderful luncheon on Thursday. They made lunch a special event and we appreciate the many hands that it took to make it so. Our staff also enjoyed the many gift cards from the PTSA; they were used as prizes in the trivia games that our offices hosted this week. Thank you also to our Choral director, Kevin Lackie, and his students who gave us their lovely classroom so that it could be transformed into a cafe!

Thank you, Chef Walden, for loaning us Culinary Arts students who helped make lunch so successful! Below are Sean Mulvaney, Johnny Ball, Jose Lopez Ramirez, Adriana Hunt, Mylo Godwin, and MJ Najarro.

  2. Athletic Boosters Appreciated us, too!

We were visited on Wednesday by the Kona Ice Truck. Staff was delighted to enjoy a cold treat on a beautiful, warm day and many of us were able to enjoy it outdoors. We are grateful for the many ways that our Athletic Boosters support Edison High School.

3. Jump Start for Rising 9th Graders

Your student's transition to high school is very important to us! This year we will be offering an optional Jump Start program to our rising 9th grade students. Students will be able to register to attend one of the two-day sessions.

  • August 9 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Transportation will be provided at limited locations.

7. ☀️ Save the Date for FCPS’ Summer Extravaganza

Don’t miss a day of family fun and learning at the FCPS Summer Extravaganza!

8. 🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh-grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth-grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

Come see the Adams Family! A Message From Mrs. Burke

Hello, Edison HS Community,

We have made it to May!  The weather has been great this week, and it has been an eventful week; I want to take a moment to highlight some of the wonderful activities that have taken place and remind you of the exciting events coming up.

This past week, we celebrated our senior athletes at Senior Nights across multiple sports. Congratulations to the boys' soccer, baseball, softball, and girls' lacrosse teams for their dedication and sportsmanship throughout their high school careers. Your hard work and commitment were evident in every game, and you've made us all very proud!

Last Saturday, our students and faculty participated in the Best Buddies Walk. It was inspiring to see our community come together to support such a fantastic cause, promoting inclusion and friendship for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

I also had the pleasure of meeting with the senior class to discuss important upcoming events—graduation and prom. It's an exciting time for our seniors, and I'm thrilled to support them as they prepare for these memorable milestones. Attention senior parents there are two big changes to the policies at Eagle Bank arena 1) Clear Bag Policy for all events and 2) they have installed Magnetometers to screen all patrons.

Don’t miss out on our drama department's production of "The Addams Family." Performances are scheduled for tonight and tomorrow, with both a matinee and an evening show. It's a spectacular display of our students' talents, and I highly encourage everyone to come and enjoy the show!

Lastly, mark your calendars for May 9th! We will be hosting our annual Art Show starting at 5:30 PM, followed by "A Night on Broadway" featuring our incredibly talented choir. It promises to be an evening filled with impressive art and captivating musical performances.

Thank you all for your continued support and enthusiasm. Let's keep the momentum going as we approach the end of the school year. Go Eagles!

This past Thursday, we recognized the Month of the Military Child. It was a special time to honor the resilience and courage of our military-connected students. Your strength inspires us all. Thank you to our ambassadors, Mrs. Mahan and Mr. Schlemmer, for organizing this event!

6. Mental Health in Childhood

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with children’s physical and mental health. Mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety are the most commonly diagnosed in children, and they often occur together. Anxiety is characterized by feelings of worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental health disorders.

Anxiety-related triggers are lonely and frightening emotional responses related to situations, persons, places or objects. Today’s sources of stress for our students may include increased coursework and graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, household responsibilities, and social media. Social media has been a great way to increase connection and communication, but for our young people it contributes to shorter and attention spans and

information overload. Signs of anxiety include appearing worried, irritable or nervous, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, along with physical symptoms such as sleeping problems, headaches, and stomach aches. It is understandable for a parent to be worried because figuring out what to do is hard. Here are five simple ways to respond to teens with anxiety:

  1. Recognize warning signs.
  2. Guide your child to take a few deep breaths to slow things down.
  3. Make sure your child understands you are available if they need to talk.
  4. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and avoid downplaying situations or issues.
  5. Help them come up with ways to deal with the situation next time.

A Message From Mrs. Burke

Hello, Edison HS Community,

Happy Friday! As we wrap up another busy week at our school, I want to take a moment to celebrate the amazing events and achievements we've experienced together.

First, I would like to congratulate all the new inductees of our National Honor Society. This past Monday night was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our exceptional students. Your commitment to academic excellence and community service is commendable, and I am incredibly proud of each one of you.

This week was also special as we celebrated the achievements of our senior athletes in tennis and track and field. Senior Nights were filled with memorable moments, celebrating our athletes' dedication and sportsmanship throughout their high school careers. Well done to all our seniors for their perseverance and spirit!

On Thursday night, we honored another group of talented students at our Electrical Construction Class Promotion Ceremony. Witnessing our students ready to take the next steps in their careers is always an inspiring moment, and I am confident that they will continue to achieve great things.

Today, our school spirit was on full display during the fun-filled pep rally. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and energy from everyone involved.  We had a big surprise and unveiled our new eagle mascot; the eagle will make appearances throughout the year.  Thank you to our staff and students for making it such a successful event!

Additionally, this past Wednesday, we celebrated Purple Up Day to show support for military children in our community. It was heartwarming to see a sea of purple throughout our halls, symbolizing our gratitude and support for these families.

Looking ahead to next week, Wednesday marks Administrative Assistant Day. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all our administrative assistants – Susan Tyson, Lulu Hiwot, Ethel Olivares, Monica Hahn, Tawanna Bates, Dianne Lewis, Sharon Grimes, Suzanne Gouger, Deborah Meighen, Miriam Benzineb, Katie Nelson, Jenn Roberts, Susan Scott and Kathy Spillman.  Your hard work and dedication are the backbone of our daily operations, and your efforts do not go unnoticed.

Next week, we will also be celebrating our cafeteria workers. Please join me in expressing our gratitude for their hard work and dedication to providing healthy meals for all of us.

Lastly, if you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to fill out the Google form to thank a teacher for Teacher Appreciate Week. Our teachers make a lasting impact on our students' lives, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude for their invaluable contribution.

Thank you all for your continued support and engagement. Let's keep the momentum going as we move forward together.

Have a great weekend!

A Message From Mrs. Burke

Hello, Edison HS Community,

I am thrilled to share some highlights and upcoming events that continue to make our community the best in Fairfax.

Firstly, I want to express how wonderful it was to see our students at last night's JROTC Military Ball. The event was a beautiful celebration, and it was truly inspiring to witness our students in their formal attire, showcasing the discipline and camaraderie that the JROTC program fosters.

Upcoming Events and Announcements:

  • Purple Up Day: As many of you know, April is the Month of the Military Child. This special recognition is a time to honor the resilience and strength of children of military families. We acknowledge the unique challenges they face due to deployments and relocations, and we celebrate their ability to adapt and thrive. To show our support, Edison High School will participate in Purple Up Day on April 17th. Everyone is encouraged to wear purple on this day as a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices.
  • Autism Acceptance Month: April is Autism Acceptance Month, and we continue to promote acceptance and celebrate the diverse talents and abilities of all our students. Notably, according to the CDC, one in 44 children in the United States is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. This emphasizes the importance of fostering inclusivity in our school environment. Here at Edison, we recognize the significance of embracing neurodiversity, acknowledging that each student, including those diagnosed with autism, brings a valuable array of talents and strengths to our community. They enrich our collective experience and remind us of the beauty and richness found in our differences.
  • Pep Rally Next Week: Looking ahead, we have our pep rally scheduled for next week on Friday! This event is a fantastic way to boost school spirit and get everyone pumped for the upcoming sports matches and school activities. Let's make this pep rally one to remember!
    • Monday- Represent a College/University
    • Tuesday- Tropical Wear
    • Wednesday- Purple Out
    • Thursday- Royalty
    • Friday- Class Colors – 9th White, 10th Black, 11th Blue, 12th Red

Looking Ahead:

  • Rising 9th Grade Jump Start Program: We are excited to welcome our future freshmen this August. Please see the attached flyer for more information about our Jump Start program designed to help incoming ninth graders transition smoothly into high school life.
  • Teacher Appreciation Week – First Week of May: Our teachers make a profound impact on our students' lives daily. Please take a moment to thank a teacher by filling out our Google Form with your kind words. Your appreciation means a lot to them, and this is a wonderful opportunity to express how much we value their hard work and dedication.

Have a great weekend!

Representatives from adult education, employment, and community programs (college, military, apprenticeship, trade school, gap year, and employment) will be on site to share information about their services.

10. Mental Health in Childhood

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with children’s physical and mental health. Mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety are the most commonly diagnosed in children, which commonly occurs together. Anxiety are feelings of worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental health disorders.

Anxiety related triggers are lonely and frightening emotional responses related to situations, persons, places or objects. Today’s sources of stress for our students include: increased coursework and graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, household responsibilities, and social media. Social media has been a great way to increase connection and communication, but for our young people it contributes to shorter attention spans and information overload.

Hello, Edison HS Community,

Man, are we getting hit with the April rain! I know that it will soon lead to beautiful May flowers. This year has really flown by, and I'm amazed by all the hard work and kindness I've seen from everyone this year.

As we head into the final quarter, it's important for all students to come to school every day ready to learn and have fun. This includes our seniors, who might be feeling "senioritis" kick in. (Hint for Senior Parents: There is no such thing as "Senior Skip Day"). Edison HS accreditation is based on our absenteeism rate, which includes excused and unexcused all-day absences. 15 or more absences will cause a student to be chronically absent for the year.  Please be mindful of this when scheduling family events and doctor appointments.

Please remember that we won't have school on Wednesday, April 10, because of Eid. It's a special day for many of our friends and their families, and I hope it's a happy time for those who celebrate.

This month, I want to spotlight our librarians—the heart and soul of our literary world. Their commitment to enriching our students' lives through literature and research is truly special. The next time you visit our library, take a moment to thank Sarah Mahan and Melanie Burdett for the doors they open for us every day through books and beyond.

Our Assistant Principals (Mr. Boyd, Dr. Boyd, Ms. Saxton, Mrs. Hagan, Ms. Starkey, Mrs. Bentley, Mrs. Guillen, and Mr. Dombrowski)  also deserve a world of thanks. Their leadership, dedication, and care for our school's well-being keep us moving smoothly and toward our goals. Their efforts often happen behind the scenes, but they are the backbone of our school’s success. Let's show them our appreciation for all the hard work they do, day in and day out.

A solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing:
    • The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m.
    • While this is a rare event, students will not go out during the 8th period to view the eclipse as we do not have special glasses for all students to wear.
    • Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal.
    • If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

Have a great weekend!

Amanda Burke
Principal

Congratulations to Ms. Engelbrecht for being awarded the Eagle of the Quarter.  Thank you for all that you do!

1. 🗓️ Calendar Reminder: Eid al-Fitr (Evening Observance Day, Holiday)

In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three-day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Tuesday, April 9, is an evening observance day. There is school on this day, but important events will not be held after school. Wednesday, April 10, is an FCPS holiday; all schools and offices will be closed. See the school year calendar.

2. Scholastic Contest Winners

The Scholastic Arts & Writing contest is a highly prestigious contest looking at the work of students in grades 7-12, offering scholarship and recognition to those who exemplify exceptional originality, skill, and personal voice. Select students from Ms. Yoon’s class submitted their short stories written in class, and after a review of 2,300+ submissions, jurors diligently scored submissions in which some of our own Edison students were selected for awards and mentions! Students will attend an award ceremony later this month to recognize their incredible work.

Congratulations to our winners:

  • Caitlin Brickley - Honorable Mention
  • Justine Olson -  Silver Key
  • Maggie Chen - Gold Key

Mrs. Burke and Ms. Saxton hearing from our students on their active physics science fair projects.  The students did a great job sharing their work!  Thank you to Ms. D'Souza and Ms. Fontana.

3. 🍳 Edison Culinary Students Invite You to Be Their Guest

Did you see the FCPS News You Choose article highlighting all the great things going on in our Culinary Arts Department? Here's what they are saying:

Bistro 1093 is named for the number of patents held by Thomas Edison. It welcomes guests as a pop-up restaurant inside Edison Academy. On most Thursdays between January and May, about 20 diners enjoy Bistro 1093’s three-course lunch. Learn more about what is described as one of the best-kept culinary secrets in Fairfax County.

Bistro Lunch Day is busy! Pictured are Ladies Who Lunch; students preparing take-out orders; student going through orders; and Chef Walden teaching a future chef.

4. Parent University:  April 17, 2024, 6:30 PM, Lecture Hall

This event is for parents of rising 12th-grade students (current 11th graders).

Topics will include:

  • Options for students after high school
  • A broad overview of the college application process
  • Specific actions students need to take at Edison HS when applying to a 4-year college/university

Parents of 11th-grade students will receive an e-mail from Ms. Cottingham with more information. Please contact Ms. Cottingham if you have any questions.

5. New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact [the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher] regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

6. IB Exams Information

From April 25th to May 17th, Edison High School’s juniors and seniors enrolled in a culminating IB course will complete their IB exams. IB exam schedules will be sent to each student’s FCPSSCHOOLS.NET email addresses with the start times and locations of their exam.

Students must arrive on time for their designated exam sessions as there are no makeups. Parents/Guardians can access the IB testing calendar at IB Testing Schedule. Please note that our exams will begin at 8:10 AM for morning sessions and noon for afternoon sessions. If a student has a question about their exam schedule for a specific course, they should contact their course teacher; if they have a question about examination procedures, they should contact Ms. Devers at [email protected].

If any parents, guardians, or alumni are interested in volunteering during IB exams, they should contact Ms. Devers at [email protected] to schedule a time slot. Assistance is most needed on May 9, 10 and 13.

  9. Edison Athletic Boosters

Hello, Edison HS Community,

As we approach the end of another busy week, I want to connect with all of you, share some important updates, and extend my warmest wishes for the upcoming Spring Break.

  • Spring Break Reminder: I hope you are as excited as I am about Spring Break. It's a well-deserved respite for our students, teachers, and staff, allowing everyone to recharge and spend quality time with family and friends. Let's all make the most of this break and return refreshed for the final leg of the academic year.
  • School Office Closure: Please remember that the school offices will be closed during the break. This means any school-related queries or paperwork will need to wait until we return. I encourage you to plan accordingly and address any immediate needs you may have before the break starts.
  • Student Holidays: This is a quick reminder that Monday and Tuesday following Spring Break are designated student holidays. Classes will resume on Wednesday, April 3, so please enjoy the extended break and return ready to dive back into your studies.
  • Staff Appreciation Week: Looking ahead, the first week of May is Staff Appreciation Week. Our staff have been the backbone of our school's success, showing incredible dedication and making significant impacts on our students' lives. We are planning to celebrate them in a special way and would love for you to be a part of it. First, we are collecting positive impact wishes in our Thank a Staff Member.  Please take a few minutes and give some shout-outs to the staff member who has impacted your or your child’s time here at Edison.  We are collecting gift cards to distribute at various times throughout the week. If you wish to celebrate our staff and show your gratitude, please bring your gift cards to the main office upon our return.
  • Fourth Quarter - The Final Stretch: When we return from break, we will be entering the 4th quarter - the final stretch of the academic year. It's a crucial time, and I encourage all students to stay focused, work hard, and finish strong. Let's make this last quarter the best one yet!
  • April - Month of the Military Child April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize and honor the contributions and sacrifices of military families, specifically the resilience of our military-connected students. We will be celebrating during the week of April 15th with various activities planned to show our support and appreciation.

In closing, I wish each and every one of you a safe, enjoyable, and rejuvenating Spring Break. Take this time to relax, have fun, and make memories with your loved ones. We look forward to seeing you back after the break!

Amanda Burke
Principal

1. Neurodiversity Affirmation Week

This week, and for the first time, FCPS is celebrating Neurodiversity Affirmation Week. It's a time to recognize, appreciate, and honor the diverse neurological differences that exist among us, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological variations. Our goal is to foster an inclusive environment that values all student’s unique learning styles and strengths, understanding that diversity is not just about the ways in which we differ, but also about embracing these differences to make our community stronger and more vibrant.

2. 🏐 New Athletic Opportunities for Students

The FCPS advertised budget for next school year expands high school athletics with boys volleyball and girls wrestling, giving students more ways to nurture their passion and enhance their well-being. FCPS is now in the middle of the annual budget process, which includes opportunities for you to give feedback. See the Budget Calendar for details. Learn more about the FCPS FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

Parents/ caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis.  View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

4. 🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

5. IB Exam Testing Information

Parents/Guardians can access the IB testing calendar at https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/assessment-and-exams/exam-schedule/.

6. Student Parking Issues

As many parents and guardians are aware, FCPS requires a parking pass for students who drive to school. We are in the unfortunate position of not having enough spaces for cars driven by students; as a result, many students park in our surrounding neighborhoods.

We receive calls daily from our neighbors who are unhappy that students park on their streets. This week, the Wellington Commons townhouse community (across Franconia Road) let us know that they will start having cars towed if they are illegally parked in their spaces. Many of their residents work from home; just because there is a spot open in the morning does not mean the owner of the parking spot is not returning. Please urge your student to respect the owner's right to their numbered spots and to find legal parking elsewhere.

A Message From Mrs. Burke

Happy Friday, Edison HS Community!

As we head into another weekend, I wanted to take a moment to touch on a few things:

Spring Break on the Horizon:

With spring break just around the corner, I know everyone is excited for some well-deserved time off. Just a friendly reminder to use this break to recharge and relax.  Our offices will be closed during spring break so that our staff can also recharge!

Staying Safe on Campus:

Help us by reminding your student that they are not allowed to leave school grounds without permission during the school day. For their safety and security, it's important to check in and out with the office if they need to leave for any reason.

Spring Sports Take Off:

Get ready for the sound of cheers! Spring sports are officially underway! Let's show our support for all our student-athletes – their dedication and hard work are truly inspiring.

Performing Arts Soaring to High Ratings:

Our students participated in assessments and came out with Excellent through Superior ratings.  We are proud of their hard work and our performing arts teachers for all of their time in getting them ready!

MYP Project Presentations:

We were excited to celebrate the culmination of our MYP students' hard work with their project presentations on Thursday. These presentations showcase their research, creativity, and critical thinking skills.  Thank you to all our teachers who helped support the students journey through these projects!

Science Fair Spotlight:

Our regional science fair is this Sunday at 3 pm at Robinson Secondary! Edison HS has some amazing student projects represented, and we wish our young scientists luck at the competition.

Family Engagement and Principal Feedback:

Finally, two important reminders:

  • We're still collecting responses for the family engagement survey. Your feedback is crucial in helping us continue to build a strong partnership between school and home. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts if you haven't already. Family Engagement Survey webpage.
  • As I complete my first year as principal, I'm also interested in your feedback. A survey will be emailed from FCPS surveys to our Edison HS families, and you can share your thoughts on my leadership and how we can continue improving Edison HS for everyone. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. Your voice matters!

Here's to a fantastic weekend and a successful start to spring!

Amanda Burke
Principal

Representative Don Beyer, the Edison area Member of Congress, came in to share his views on leadership with our students.

1. Orchestra Assessment Results

Edison Orchestras had a wonderful showing of performances at Assessment! We received very helpful feedback from the judges. Chamber Orchestra received a grade of 1 - Superior and Symphonic and Concert Orchestras both received a grade of 2 - Excellent. All of the judges commented on how passionatately our students perform. One judge told Edison director Mr. Jeerakul, "I hope you recognize and appreciate what an exceptional group you are a part of."

Please enjoy the recordings from Assessment: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8QINud014-08xtVBcfFn0Wot534lD-nS

If you haven’t already, please take FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey today! Survey results will help us to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey is available in 10 languages. Please check your email for a message from FCPS partner, K12 Insight, with a link to the survey or access the survey now. Your voice matters!

4. Join a Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation on the opioid crisis in Northern Virginia will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. (Please enter through Door #14). Attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed will be suitable for students in grade 6 and higher. Language interpretation will be available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed.

Learn more about the event and register online.

4. MYP Personal Project Showcase

Eighty of our 10th grade students presented their personal projects yesterday.  The students demonstrated an impressive depth of reflection, and we saw an incredible increase in their engagement with the whole process.  Students were reflective and vulnerable, sharing what skills they had improved throughout.  They truly exemplified the IB Learner profile. See photo above and below!

5. Learn About Pathways and Opportunities at Virtual Military Night

FCPS School Counseling Services is hosting a Virtual Military Night on Wednesday, March 20, 6-8 p.m. This event is designed for high school students and their families who are interested in learning more about the military pathways and opportunities. Enlistment, service academies, and ROTC pathways will be represented.

6. Parent University:  Mental Health Awareness

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

We are delighted to invite you to an important information session on mental health awareness, focusing on depression and anxiety, hosted by Edison High School. This session aims to provide strategies for navigating the mental health challenges within our community.

  • Date: March 21, 2024
  • Time: 6:00 - 7:00 PM
  • Location: Edison High School Lecture Hall

During the session, our dedicated staff will offer comprehensive presentations on identifying signs, understanding symptoms, and accessing available resources for support. Furthermore, we are thrilled to facilitate a student panel discussion. Our students will share their perspectives on what parents need to know about mental health and provide suggestions on fostering open dialogues within families.

This event promises to be an enriching experience, offering valuable information and fostering constructive conversations about mental health within our community. We encourage all parents, guardians, and students to attend and participate actively.

The session will conclude with a question and answer segment, providing an opportunity for further clarification and engagement.

Your presence and participation are highly valued as we work together to promote mental health awareness and support within our school community. Together, we can create a safe and supportive environment for all.

We look forward to seeing you at the Mental Health Awareness Information Session on March 21st.

7. 🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

8. Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources

9. 💜 Purple Up! on April 17 to Support Military Families

Join our community and turn FCPS purple on Purple Up! Day, Wednesday, April 17. Wear purple in recognition of FCPS’ 14,000 enrolled military-connected students.

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is a religious and cultural observance day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances during the school year. There is school on observance days, however, tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be scheduled. See the school year calendar.
